Four Lodges Thredbo
- Thredbo, NSW
- Project Details
This project is a small alpine development of four one bedroom ski lodges situated on a particularly steep site at the base of mount Crackenback, nestled among the Snowy Mountains. The project aims to continue the development of the notion of Australian alpine architecture. To this end the buildings are designed to have minimal impact on the site with materials that reflect the vernacular of the Australian bush.
An economical entrance is provided at ground level, leading to the main body of the lodge which hovers above the site. The hovering building preserves existing natural drainage patterns and vegetation. The form of the building is simple and meticulously detailed using timber, stone and corrugated iron. Orientation, weather protection, views and cross ventilation were key considerations throughout the design process and informed the final building form as it took shape.
