This significant public project will form the community heart of Green Square, Australia’s largest urban renewal project, which will become home to some 48,000 new residents. The project redefines the traditional idea of a library, fusing a range of innovative buildings with the outdoor plaza to create multiple sites for play, work and rest. Some of the buildings are below ground while bookshelves sit outdoors in the plaza. The design includes a huge open plan community room, a green walled amphitheatre, a storytelling garden, sliding sun lounges and wide open spaces for festivals.

The project was the winning scheme in an international design competition organised by the City of Sydney. A jury of leading Australian and international architects made the unanimous decision based on the design’s innovative urban response and for redefining the traditional idea of library.

""It has the potential to be one of the most exciting places to be in Sydney, it will create a real bombshell in this place"

Glenn Murcutt, Green Square Competition
Jury Member

"The Jury strongly and unanimously recommends the Stewart Hollenstein + Stewart Architecture scheme as the winner of the Green Square Library & Plaza Competition. The Jury felt that while another design might have been a great library for today, the winning design represented a great library for the future. The Jury also believes that this scheme will be a very positive asset for the entire Green Square community and an exciting new project for the City of Sydney, further enhancing its reputation as a world leader."
