  • The Year 3 & 4 Building is the second building constructed within the framework of the new Master Plan. The building is sited in a previously ‘forgotten’ corner of the Junior School campus. The challenging topography provided opportunity to create a multi-level solution where each floor opens directly to different levels of the campus.

The brief required accommodation for two year levels with associated support spaces. These year levels are located on separate floors to provide independence but with internal and external links to allow collaboration. Spaces are designed to promote activity-based learning: an inclusive pedagogy that aims to facilitate all learning styles and teaching types in a series of linked sessions led by both students and teachers.

The flexible design allows classrooms to join and for all spaces to combine with the central inquiry space for larger exhibitions and gatherings. Intimate meeting spaces provide for small-group learning and staff training. Nooks in the stairs provide reclusive spaces for contemplation and reading.

"The building bounds new outdoor spaces including oval and playground. It is positioned to maintain solar access to the main quadrangle, but buffer cold winter winds to provide enjoyable outdoor space throughout the year.  The upper floor opens to the native landscape of Gossan Hill promoting student consideration of and interaction with the natural environment.”
